Wheatley Cup Final - Sunday 18th August 2013 - Venue Carlton CC - Town St.

The day had finally come, Carlton 2XI were appearing in their first final for nearly 2 decades. Town Street looked immaculate!!  A special thanks must go to those who made this day very special indeed.

Having won the toss we decided to bat, Close and Sampson had been in decent nick over the last few weeks, but this didn’t continue into today. Both removed early on by Joe Logan Carlton were 9-2.  Ready and Parker then steadied the ship, with Parker going on to make 81 not out, supported briefly by Wilbor, Gale and Busby. We were to set Altofts 169 to win.

It took us a few overs to get going in the field, and Hodgy was looking like he would bowl 8 without a wicket, however Mr reliable produced a top effort bagging 3-18 at one point he was on a hat-trick, but just swayed down the leg side. He was supported by Nick Busby who bagged 2-16 of his 8 with the scalp of Joe Logan who had dug Altofts out of the mire at 55-5, Wilbor and Read also getting in the wickets. The over rate had started to creep up and a tense finish was on the cards. 24 required of 3 overs. Read bowled a good over only a few from it. Into the 39th over and it could have gone either way, but we knew Altofts needed boundaries, Close was looking at going for an expensive over 13 off it with 1 ball to go, then it was that magical moment, in the block hole it went and the timbers were down……… Carlton were Champions……………..Simon “young man” Parker  was named man of the match for his 81 not out.

Congratulations to all who took part and made this a memorable occasion, and that long overdue trophy for the 2nds (21 years to be exact), and that amazing support we received from all.
